Welcome to my channel!
I'm a guitar teacher with many years of experience both teaching and giging in bands. My goal here is to share the info that I have as well as help guitarists move through ruts or find inspiration.
I write TABs and notation for every video I upload so you can spend more than the 5-8 minutes in the video on a challenging or difficult subject. All those TABs can be found on my Patreon page. Please consider supporting me there if the content I produce inspires or helps you.
My deepest hope is that what I present and publish here is helpful for some guitarists. If it is then any effort I put in is worth it to me. I hope you find this channel interesting, and if you do, please consider subscribing.
Thank you!

What is this song ?
@@Hitman_RT I’m sure the progression has been used for a lot of tunes, this is Dm, F, C, G
The conscious incompetence stage is quite frustrating for me right now. I might be better off if I was still just strumming open chords with a pick and pleased to be sounding better than I did a few weeks ago. But at least all the available great resources now available online give me vision of where I want to go.
Indeed, I feel the same way sometimes. I also believe it’s important to sit back on what you DO know and DO well to keep that joy in it all. I still hit that wall myself when I’m pushing to learn something new. Best of luck, Steven! Keep on playing!
This must be one of the most understandable versions of the subject i have run across. Thank you Chris!
You are SO welcome!
This tutorial takes me way back to early 2004 when I took my first guitar lesson. My former teacher would always stress the importance of practicing scale and triad studies, so I made sure to set the ground work in place. Fast forward 20 yrs. I think it’s fair to say that my fretboard knowledge is pretty good! I love your teaching style and if I were learning the instrument today I wouldn’t hesitate in joining your community. 👍😎
Thanks, great comment! You and I were lucky to have high quality instruction early on. It really makes a huge difference.
Until I saw this I thought playing outside ment sitting in the park and jamming ,which isn't all that great in winter !!!
Ha!
Great lesson Chris, I would certainly love to learn more about how to put acoustic songs together in this sense from cover songs or any song really in your Patreon (Stage Area) where we can learn by you choosing a song for us, then allowing us to have a go at it and then you breaking it down for us, so we get this "ongonig" voice leading, melody and harmony principles for creating our own songs... Maybe I'm just too new to your membership as yet and have yet to find this, but there isn't too many teaching how to break a song down and voice lead, harmonize and melodize the whole thing, but this is certainly fascinating stuff and you're teaching it 👍
That’s a great idea, Adam. I have a few videos on how to break down a song to learn, but there could always be more. Message me on Patreon and I’ll get you a link or two. I like the idea of assigning a song to learn, we do looper challenges in The Studio, which isn’t exactly the same but folks have a blast with it!
Awesome video. Need to watch it a few times but the info is gold. 🎶🎶🎶🎸🎸🎸
So glad you're enjoying this one!
The G Major scale you played sounded like the first chords to “Lean On Me” no?
Indeed! "Lean on me" simply starts with an ascending progression of the first 4 chords in the key. Makes it one of the easiest wins to play on a piano in the key of C ever :)
This is really good stuff on drilling those triads, so much so that I've gone and joined your Patreon as a keen follower on the top level just today... I think your way of teaching is awesome and easily digestible in these little bite size lessons you can take away and practice getting under your fingers for a few days or a week, try them in music and then come back for more... No more information overload or paralysis for me with guitar (and believe me as a self-taught guitarist picking your path and what to use now and save for later to learn is mighty challenging)... Thanks so much for being on RUclips and doing the work you do!
Can't wait to get started with you Adam. We're moving The Studio to a new platform next month, so watch on Patreon for news about that. Thanks for your support!
This is exactly where I am in my playing right now - 🙏
Happy to be on the path with you! Hope this one helps! What a huge wonderful world this leads to!!
On the feet board where it belongs! Yes!
Pardon me for saying, but the dirty sound of the guitar is silly. Cropper didn't use that type of sound when he recorded the song, and even if he did, for teaching it would be much better with a clean guitar, perhaps a bit of reverb. As Miles Davis famously said (possibly apochryphaly), "There are no wrong notes...there are, however, poor note choices." I think we can apply that here. There are no wrong guitar tones, but there are poor tone choices.
Thanks for the feedback, I’m hopeful that it didn’t distract too much from the actual content. Thanks again! Stay curious!
@@curiousguitaristdealing with these comments have to be exhausting
@@RahSH1 Nah...I don't mind it. I know someday it'll be too much, but until then, I'm good. :)
Sensational lesson dude. I love people who teach in intervals. It’s The difference between handing someone a fish, and teaching them how to fish.
Ha! Love that analogy! Thanks for the kind words, stay curious!
Chris, it’s funny but when I first started learning the 5 shapes using the usual ho hum training I knew it was the wrong way to go and to make a long story short I formulated my own way which is what you teach here. Love your channel. I even have the caged shapes memorized in 4ths order. GCEAD. Just like changing chords it’s Super helpful to know because you can do relative movements while running through a progression. I also know where all the triads live in each. Also being the sick person I am 😂 I have the circle of. 4/5ths memorized in scale degrees, 7362514 b7 b3 etc. even more useful (fast efficient) when analyzing a chord /scale/solo you don’t recognize etc. Some don’t realize this but the 5 shapes occur because there are only 5 unique strings on the guitar. It becomes more obvious if it wasn’t for the kinky B string. 😅
Great comment and context, love the GCEAD context!
THANK YOU!!! SO USEFUL
You’re so welcome!

Thank you for this comment, James. There’s nothing more satisfying for me than to know I’ve inspired someone to explore the fretboard. Looking forward to working with you.
This is exactly how I use diagonal pentatonics to figure this out for each position. So valuable. Great tidbit of info right here.

Thank you! This is always a stumbling block. Don’t get the note numbers in relation to number of frets. Keeps me just relying on shapes and stumped on seeing notes or understanding diff between 2nd, maj 2nd, min 2nd …
Ahh so glad this worked well for you, Mike! Thanks for the view and comment.
Another great lesson!
Thanks, Chris!
Yes!!!!! Such a cool lesson
Yes, I have always found the key to "memorizing" the shapes and how they correspond to the pentatonics is which finger is used at the lowest tone root position. Get that right and your fingers fall into place almost automatically. Very well explained in the video.
Nice!
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you!
Over a Blues with 3 Dominant 7 chords, each chord can use all 12 notes in this order: first 3 and b7, then 1-3-5-b7; then 1-b3/3-5-b7; then 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7 (which is Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale); then use b2-b6-7 in chromatic lines that resolve to chord tones. - It took me a lifetime to figure out that all 12 notes can be used over each Dominant 7 chord in a 12-bar Blues with 3 Dominant 7 chords.

I have been playing guitar a very long time (without a teacher) and this was the most succinct demonstration of triad I've encountered online. Marvelous.
I am so glad this landed well for you, David. Thanks for the views and comment.
Very interesting. Extremely interesting even. But I’m not sure I like it for Blues per se….. You’ve definitely unlocked a door for me….but not for the Blues. Keep Blues bluesy, if you know what I mean. I like my SRV the way it is. Robben Ford isn’t my cup of tea. But I did hear some David Grissom stuff in there. I do like his playing. But this definitely has other applications. I’ve been playing for awhile but sometimes you’re just not ready to receive something. Well, I received this. Thank you.
Thanks for this great comment! The blues is such a vast canvas, and we all like it a little differently. These 7-note scales add a new initial color palette, and players like Robben Ford take it a lot further. It if you’ve “heard” it, you can at least decide now where you go. Focus on the 3rd and b7 here, all you need to do to turn this idea “nastier” is to flat that 3rd as well and bend it!!
Saw you a couple of times on Marty's channel and love your teaching style, so here I am, a new sub. I am also a new player, so be gentle! Old hands, old & tight fingers. Wish me luck.
Yeah, we all started that way...well maybe some of us had younger fingers at the start! You got this!!
This is great you did this. He's crazy good
Yeah, I’m a big fan of
Great lesson!
Glad you enjoyed it!
OK, so what I just watched was what I’ve been interested in for a few years now…Modes! How you began your lesson by restricting to two notes per string forces the player to find the correct notes in other areas on the neck. Unfortunately I’m away from my guitars for a while so I can’t try your methods. Anyway long story short this lesson is Outstanding! Thanks!!! PS: where do I find the information on playing each mode? “I Do Prefer Lydia Mix Ales Locally” is my Nemonic Device for remembering the names and order of the modes!
I have a few modes lessons here on the channel. This one is pretty informative: ruclips.net/video/v01pGRHdng0/видео.html I'm also ironically just wrapping up a live modes workshop over the next couple of Saturdays.
Key takeaway for me - "Everything...all 12 notes are inside this bracket."
Exactly!
Just found your channel. Great stuff. Cant wait to watch more. Thank you.
Welcome aboard!!!
Exactly what I was looking for
Yes!!!
Again, great video. I feel like the major scale should be the first scale aspiring guitarists should tackle. Couple questions, though. I may have missed it, but did you mention what intervals of the scale you are playing sequentially with this exercise? Three notes per string, moving up the fretboard this way (W-W-H-W-W-W-H). Is that F# supposed to be the root note of the scale you are starting with? Also, I am asking a lot of questions, is there a tip jar I can throw money into? I realize this is your job, so I don't want to mooch. Thanks!
No worries! Since this is the major scale, ANY of the 7 notes can be seen as the root of one of the 7 modes. This entire exercise should be considered technical and non-musical initially. What we're after here is technical mastery of the scale across the entire fretboard. Once we have THAT, we can freely set the context. This whole structure could be used as Ionian, or Dorian, or Phrygian, etc... Hope that helps. Tip jar here: www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=E8HDTDGCQUCTY Thanks in advance!!! -Chris
